What
a busy year we had - skiing in Colorado and Canada well into May
, a great summer in Europe with over 17 weeks OnTop and upon return
to the US in October we packed up the big U-Haul and made the
long anticipated move north to Canada.
Our
“primary” residence is now in Canmore, 15 minutes from Banff,
with hundreds of kilometers mountain ranges in National and Provincial
Parks in our new backyard: Banff, Jasper, Yoho, Bugaboos, Kananaskis,
Kootenay just to name a few. Most importantly, we upgraded our
living situation from Heather’s one bedroom basement suite to
a great house (picture soon to come on this very page) with the
most wonderful views of all the peaks that line the Bow Valley
to the west of Canmore.
Winter
has been rolling in with some delay this year - not at all in
regards to the temperatures, but rather to snow. An unusual split
in the jet stream over the pacific that lasted several weeks took
most of the moisture that is usually B.C.-bound further south
into Utah and Colorado - enjoy guys! It
looks like we are now back to the normal pattern and the systems
are rolling into the Selkirks and Monashee Mountains the way they
are supposed to. The delay in snow accumulation will not have
any effect on the ski touring that I have planned this year starting
in April, but it sure did have an effect on my heli-ski guide
work with CMH. We are now scheduled to open our Revelstoke operation
on January 2nd, which is a full month later than originally planned.
This is not all bad, because it gave us some more time for settling
into our house and to do lots of ice climbing around here, since
the conditions have been really shaping up well lately. Actually,
more specifically, Heather settling and Jorg ice climbing.
This
unforeseen free time will also give me the opportunity to add
some more scheduled trips to our 2001 program, which will show
up on the web page within the next few weeks. Among those new
trips: Ice climbing weeks in Banff National Park, non-technical
12 day hike in the German and Austrian Alps with visits to the
4 Castles of “mad” Bavarian King Ludwig II, 1
week glaciated peaks traverse in the Monte Rosa Range in Switzerland/Italy,
13 days best Via ferratas around Cortina, Italy, 6 day hike with
camping in the Canadian Rockies, 10 days biking in the Provence,
12 days rock climbing in Southern France, 7 day Ski Touring trip
in a backcountry hut in the Selkirks etc.
Heather is also currently doing some work for CMH while applying
for teaching positions. We are planing to be back in Colorado
for most of May and be back in Europe for the summer again.
