Bernese Alps "Eiger Trek"
Classic Swiss Hiking Traverse

Alps/Switzerland

7 Days Inn to Inn on marked trails eye to eye with the glaciers of the Swiss Alps from Meiringen via Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Kandersteg to Gstaad

Highlights:
- The Swiss Alps at their best!
- Worldclass glacier views everyday
- Charming Inns - no dorms.

- Eiger (Ogre), Moench and Jungfrau
- 5 famous resort town en route
- Oeschinen: The Alps' prettiest lake
- Excellent public transport
- Quick access from Zurich airport

This is for good reason one of the Alps' super classic treks. A week of hiking in the shadow of the Eiger and many of the famous glaciated peaks of the Swiss Alps. Contrasting high level panoramic trails are the quaint resort villages that we will be passing through: Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Muerren, Kandersteg and finally Gstaad. With the excellent train system, participants get from and to Zurich Airport in three hours.

We have chosen quaint, family owned hotels in the valleys as well as three charming mountain inns - no dormitory sleeping on this trek! On most days, a mountain train, gondola or the puplic bus helps to bridge some of the sizeable vertical gains and drops on this trek.

In short, a must-do trip for any fit hiker. Given the non-technical nature, we also offer the Bernese Alps Trek as a self-guided trip in the core summer season.

Bernese Alps Trek - 7 days Hiking in the Swiss Alps

Trip Details and Small Print - Bernese Alps Swiss Classic

Can I do it?
Strenious but non-technical trail hike with up to 8 hrs hiking (up to 6 miles (10 km), maximum of 3300 ft (1000 m) vertical gain) on some of the days. Trails vary hugely from forest roads to narrow trails with steep drop offs that are secured with fixed ropes or chains for hand railing on short sections. The trek includes three high pass traverses with sustained uphill and downhill sections, which could be hazardous if the trail was snow covered of frozen, which can happen any month of the season but more so in June, September and October. In case of adverse conditions, easier variations are available and so is a detour to the day's destination by public transport.

What are the Hotels / Mountain Lodges like? Rooms? Showers? Food Choices?
All nights will be spend in private rooms. We have chosen small family-owned hotels at the two and three star level in the resort towns. The mountain lodges / high pasture farms are spectacularly located and also offer private rooms, however the showers are shared.

In the mountain lodges, we have booked a half board dinner and dietary preferences can be accomodated to a large extent. In the Hotels in the resort towns, we will be eating in restaurants a las carte.

Meeting Point / Airport:
Meet on the first day of the trek at 7.30 in our hotel in Interlaken, which can be conveniently reached by train from Zurich airport in about 2 hrs.

Climate, Weather, Temperatures:
High season for all mountaineering and hiking in the western Alps is early July through mid September..

Understandably, many Bernese Alps Trekkers worry about catching a bad weather week. Here are some hard facts to help you assess your chances from the Meteo Swiss statistics for Zermatt (Averages from 1961 - 1991):
